Side Effects of Tampons? Yes, even Tampons.

eyswdeopn:

Tampons have been around for almost 70 years, but it wasn’t until the addition of synthetic chemicals and the discovery of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) that researchers began to question their safety. In doing so, they’ve pulled the plug on possible health risks. Dr. Ilya Sandra Perlingieri, retired professor from San Diego State University and author of the recently released The Uterine Crisis, said women who read the risks of tampon use off the side of a box aren’t getting the full story.

What’s in your tampon?

Tampons are made of a variety of ingredients, “Tampons are not just cotton,” Perlingieri said. “They are made of dyes, fragrances, super-absorbent chemicals.” She said research has found a link between uterine problems and bleached tampons.

“In the last 25 years, millions of women—teens through women in elder years—have uterine-related troubles,” she said. “Part of the trouble we know from research is directly related to bleaching of tampons.”

Chlorine from bleach eventually turns to dioxin, Perlingieri said. “All tampons are bleached with the exception of two companies,” she said. “Chlorine, whether in laundry, swimming pools, or in tampons, breaks down into a deadly chemical called dioxin.”

“Dioxin is one of the most dangerous chemicals on the planet and literally a tablespoon [of it] would kill everyone on the planet,” she said. “It’s so deadly.” Read full article.

To avoid this, DO NOT use commercial tampons. Playtex, Tampax, Kotex, etc. all contain chlorine and bleach and other harmful ingredients. Look for organic tampons, chlorine-free tampons. Or use pads, preferably organic pads but that isn’t nearly as crucial as using organic tampons considering that they don’t go inside of you.

This is important and I want to add some links and other information. LunaPads are reusable/washable organic cotton pads. If not comfortable with using washable pads, and would rather use one-time throw-away products, I used to use and fully support NatraCare brand of organic feminine products. They do not test on animals, are vegan, and there’s a product for everyone - they make tampons, pads, liners, and wipes. Beyond that, menstrual cups are healthy, and there are many brands to choose from (DivaCup, MoonCup, SoftCup, LadyCup, Lunette, Keeper, etc etc). I personally use the DivaCup now, and am completely willing to answer any questions anyone may have about using “alternative feminine products.”

Most menstrual cups can be kept from 1-10 years (check out what is recommended for each individual brand). This is an easy way to save money (think: $4/month for tampons or pads, or more = $48 or more a year. Most menstrual cups cost $30-$40 and last for a few years).
